These are the steps to wipe your Mac and reinstall the operating system without losing any of your data. It is the option that we at iSTYLE Apple Premium Reseller recommend you do before wiping the hard drive. In most cases, it solves Mac problems and improves the overall performance of your Mac.


There is no difference between erasing a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air. What you have to consider is whether your Mac has an Intel processor or an Apple (M) processor. How do you know which processor your Mac has? You just have to go to the Apple in the top-left corner, and click on About This Mac. In the Processor section, it will say Intel or M-Chip.


How to erase a Mac with an Intel processor without losing any data

Step 1. Turn off your Mac and make sure it is plugged into a power source.

Step 2. Turn on your Mac and immediately press the keys Command + R. Keep them pressed until the Apple appears. It’s normal for this to take a few minutes.

Step 3. You may be prompted for a Mac user password to wipe your Mac. In this case, simply type it in to continue.

Step 4. Once the options menu has loaded, verify that you are connected to the Internet via cable or Wi-Fi connection. You can do this by clicking on the network icon in the upper-right hand corner.

Step 5. Now it's time to click the second menu option: Reinstall macOS. Follow the instructions, and after about 20 minutes, your Mac will have been reset.


How to erase a Mac with an Apple processor (M chip) without losing any data

Step 1. Turn off your Mac. Remember that it should still be plugged into the power supply.

Step 2. Press the power key (where the fingerprint sensor is located) for several seconds. You will see a gear icon, click on it and then click continue.

Step 3. You may be prompted for the Mac user password. In so, simply enter it in to continue.

Step 4. Once the options menu has loaded, verify that you are connected to the Internet via cable or Wi-Fi connection. You can do this by clicking on the network icon in the upper-right hand corner.

Step 5. Now it's time to click the second menu option: Reinstall macOS. Simply follow the instructions, and after about 20 minutes your Mac will have been reset and the operating system will have been reinstalled.

But don't worry, we’ll go through what you need to do step by step. Again, there is a difference between a Mac with an Intel processor, and a Mac with an Apple processor (M-Chip).


How to wipe the hard drive and reset a Mac with an Intel processor

Step 1. Turn off the Mac and make sure it is plugged into the mains.

Step 2. Turn on the Mac and immediately press Command + R. Hold them down until the Apple appears. It is completely normal for it to take several minutes to turn on.

Step 3. You may be prompted for the Mac user password. In so, simply enter it in to continue.

Step 4. Once the options menu has loaded, check that you are connected to the Internet via cable or Wi-Fi. You can do this by clicking on the antenna icon in the upper-right hand corner.

Step 5. Having done this, let's click on the last option: Disk Utility. Then click "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar.

Step 6. Select the Erase option found in the toolbar. In "Name" type "Macintosh HD". In “Format”, choose APFS if it was already marked before. Or choose macOS Plus with log-in if it was also marked before. In most cases it will be APFS.

Step 7. Click on "Erase volume group". If you do not see this option, click directly on "Erase". Once erased, you can close that window.

Step 8. Now it's time to click reinstall macOS from the main menu. Follow the instructions, and after about 20 minutes your Mac will have been reset.


How to wipe the hard drive and reset a Mac with an Apple processor (M chip)

Step 1. Turn off the Mac and make sure it is plugged into the mains.

Step 3. A menu with several options will load. First check that you are connected to the internet. You can do this by clicking on the Wi-Fi icon that you find in the bar at the top.

Step 5. Having done this, click on the last option: Disk Utility. Then click "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar.

Step 6. Click the Erase option on the toolbar in the same window. In Name type "Macintosh HD" and in “Format” select APFS.

Step 7. Click on "Erase volume group". If you do not see this option, click directly on "Erase". Once erased, you can close that window.

Step 8. Now it's time to click reinstall macOS from the main menu. Follow the instructions, and after about 20 minutes your Mac will have been fully reset.
