On the iPhone 13 the cameras are diagonal! This has been done to allow more space for sensors. This results in better pictures and better video stabilisation. We'll see it all later on!
Main camera difference on the iPhone 12 vs the iPhone 13
The primary camera is also known as the wide-angle camera. On both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, it is twelve megapixels with an f/1.6 focal aperture. At first glance, they look the same, but the iPhone 13 has a new sensor, and it achieves:
- Capturing 47% more light: which translates into better night shots and clearer details in bright sunlight.
- Sensor-shift optical image stabilisation: for incredibly steady shots even if you move around a lot.
In the following image we can see how in the iPhone 13 photograph the sky looks bluer and there is more contrast in the dark areas of the stone.
Difference between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 ultra wide-angle cameras
The ultra-wide-angle camera is perfect for landscape photography groups of people. In this camera, we find fewer differences between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. It is practically the same, except in dark areas, where the new ultra-wide-angle gets more light.
In the following picture, we see how the ultra-wide-angle lens gives a less yellowish light at night. It was also a complicated situation for the camera, with very little light and the only light coming from a straightforward source.
Cinema Mode and HDR 4 in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 camera:
The quality of the camera is essential for high-quality image or video processing. The iPhone is king at that! Thanks to the iPhone 13's powerful processor, it does two amazing things:
- The iPhone 13's Intelligent HDR 4 technology detects up to four different people in a photo and optimises contrast, lighting and skin tone independently. The result is an artificial intelligence that enhances every image you take so they look like never before.
- The cinema mode uses a technique that is very common in Hollywood. It consists of shifting the focus from one element to another in order to direct attention to the main person or object in each scene. The iPhone 13 does this automatically, even taking into account people outside the scene. Look at this! Here is an example.
