What to do when iPhone Face ID isn't working?

If you're having trouble using Face ID to unlock your iPhone, authenticate purchases, or sign in to apps, follow these steps to fix the issue.
1 - Check for Software Updates
- Make sure your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
- Confirm that your iPhone model supports Face ID.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for updates.
2 - Verify Face ID Settings
- Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
- Ensure Face ID is set up and turned on for the features you want to use.
3 - Check the TrueDepth Camera
- Remove any obstructions (case, screen protector, smudges) covering the TrueDepth camera.
- If you're using your iPhone in landscape mode (iPhone 13 and later), ensure your hand isn't blocking the camera.
4 - Ensure Your Face Is Fully Visible
- Make sure your eyes, nose, and mouth are fully visible.
- If wearing a face mask, ensure you've set up Face ID with a mask (iPhone 12 & later, iOS 15.4+).
- Sunglasses might interfere with Face ID, especially if they block infrared light. Try removing them.
5 - Face the TrueDepth Camera Properly
- On iPhone 13 & later (iOS 16+), Face ID works in portrait & landscape modes.
- On earlier iPhone models, Face ID only works in portrait mode.
- Keep your iPhone 10-20 inches from your face for the best recognition.
6 - Restart Your iPhone
- Restart your device and enter your passcode. Then try using Face ID again.
7 - Add an Alternate Appearance
- If your look changes significantly, add an Alternate Appearance in Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
8 - Reset Face ID
If Face ID still isn’t working, reset it:
- Step 1: Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode
- Step 2: Tap Reset Face ID
- Step 3: Tap Set Up Face ID again
9 - Check for Hardware Issues
