What is Apple's Private Relay?
Private Relay is a feature that allows you to connect to the Internet and browse more securely and privately. It ensures that information leaving your iPhone, iPad or Mac is encrypted so that no one can get your IP address, location or browsing history in order to create a detailed, commercial profile about you.
The secret of Private Relay lies in hiding the IP address of your iPhone, iPad or Mac. What is an IP address? Let's say it's your device's identity document. When you browse with your iPhone, for example, that iPhone has a number that identifies it.
Private Relay means that no website can track you because your IP address remains hidden. This guarantees a level of privacy and security never seen before. And best of all! Once activated you can continue to do everything as usual, with this extra layer of security.
How does Private Relay work?
The process is very simple. When you search the Internet, traditionally your IP address goes directly to the page you visit. With Private Relay there is a double filter:
- You perform the search on the Internet
- Your IP address is forwarded to an Apple server generating a different IP address.
- This Apple-generated IP address is sent again to another non-Apple server. In this way a new IP address is obtained.
- This third IP address is the one that enters the website you wanted to visit.
All these steps are performed in a matter of microseconds. As a double IP address change is generated, the website only obtains information from the second server and it is therefore impossible to trace the actual origin.
Where is Private Relay and how do I activate it?
Private Relay is a feature that is included in iCloud +. That means, if you pay the typical €0.99 to enjoy extra iCloud storage, you will have Private Relay included among the other iCloud advantages. To activate it, just go to Settings> Your name> iCloud> Private Relay.
When will Relay Private be available?
As we have seen, Relay Private works on iPhone, iPad or Mac. It will be available this September when the new software updates arrive. We're talking about iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey.
